How might an invisible bodily change become a quiet, legible pause?

Overview

CloudSense explores how people can notice emotional change before it becomes noise. A cloud-shaped device gathers heart rate, electrodermal activity and fingertip temperature through touch, then pairs the signals with a reflective interface. The project was deliberately narrowed from ‘judging emotion’ to supporting personal recording and reflection.

My contribution

Built the Arduino Nano and Python acquisition flow, connected three sensor types, designed the web interface, modelled the enclosure and iterated the 3D-printed physical prototype.

Can the body warn the skier before excitement hides fatigue?

Overview

VIGIL is a thigh-worn fatigue-awareness system for recreational skiers. It combines surface electromyography, a short personal baseline and RMS / MDF / MNF features with three levels of visual and haptic feedback, helping a skier decide when to slow down or rest without interrupting the experience.

My contribution

Interviewed two skiers, narrowed the problem from posture coaching to fatigue awareness, then completed wiring and soldering, live signal capture and filtering, electronics enclosure modelling, wearable prototyping and the end-to-end web display flow.

How can a boundary remain legible to herders and become permeable to wildlife?

Overview

Common Ground responds to the conflict between pasture fencing and Przewalski’s gazelle movement around Qinghai Lake. Instead of removing the fence, the proposal embeds two or three linked gate modules into the existing boundary and connects passage configuration, inspection, operation and maintenance compensation into one accountable system.

My contribution

Mapped stakeholder needs and maintenance responsibility, developed the conditional passage logic, and joined the construction of a near full-scale functional fence prototype, iterating timber dimensions, joints and locking positions.

Working with AI

I defined the need to preserve visual iterations, shaped the canvas workflow and provided feedback through use, working with AI on the interface, integration and iteration.

Current scope

A local tool for organizing images and exploring branching workflows. The example shown here demonstrates importing and editing, rather than claiming a generated result.

Next iterations

Next: make large image collections easier to find and review, then explore use across devices. Public release follows sustained personal use.

Working with AI

I began with my own posture-management needs, chose what to record and revisit, then worked with AI to connect the map, exercise library and daily journal.

Current scope

A personal posture-journaling prototype. Relationships and exercise content still require professional review; corrective outcomes have not been validated, and it does not provide diagnosis.

Next iterations

Improve long-term records and personalization first, then explore independent user profiles, cross-device use and an app. These remain future directions.

Can a toaster explain what it is doing before the bread is already burnt?

Design intent

Conventional pop-up toasters hide the cooking state inside a narrow slot and force different bread forms into one interaction. This concept reworks the appliance around an observable conveyor, a transparent cover and a small set of legible controls.

My contribution

Identified usability issues, translated design-psychology principles into the operating sequence, explored the form through sketches, and completed the product model and renders.

The transparent cover turns browning from a hidden state into continuous feedback. Bread enters from one side and leaves from the other, so direction, progress and result share one natural spatial mapping.

An open feed path accepts slices, thicker bread and small pastries without a fixed slot. A single control reduces decision load, while the pull-out tray makes crumbs visible and cleaning direct.

How can regional character feel specific without becoming heavy or nostalgic?

Design intent

The project reframes a regional health product for younger daily use. Instead of relying on dense claims or familiar gift-box conventions, it uses a flower-like folding structure, botanical linework and a restrained cream–olive palette.

My contribution

Completed product research, positioning, visual language, information hierarchy and the structural dieline, then produced a printed packaging sample.

From crop to quiet recognition

Buckwheat flowers and leaves become a fine botanical line system rather than a decorative illustration pasted onto a box. The information hierarchy keeps the product name, origin and brewing cues easy to find.

Brand concept

The name begins with a reading-inspired idea: page 24 is where a story starts to unfold. The bookstore is imagined as an unexpected entry into a plot, where visitors discover new interests through books, coffee and exhibitions. In response to online reading and increasingly similar physical bookstores, the project brings brand philosophy, visual identity and visitor experience into a shared identity.

The design ambition centres on space and environment, supported by wayfinding, communications, stationery, staff uniforms and everyday objects. The following identity, application and interface work presents the available parts of this system.

My contribution

Co-developed cup and wrapping-paper applications, and independently completed the tote bag, membership card and 28-page website interface. Selected identity assets, objects and screens show how the visual system works across different touchpoints.

A bear, a number, an identity

The number 24 and a bear form one recognisable, approachable mark. Ochre, brown and paper tones carry the reading-room palette, with reading-lamp yellow as an accent. The mark appears on its own or becomes a repeating pattern for different applications.

An identity to carry

The tote leaves space around the mark while keeping its sides and opening simple. Capacity, handling and identity come together in an everyday object. The membership card follows the same graphic language, with the mark on the front and membership details on the reverse.
